“I JUST WANT WHAT’S BEST FOR YOU.”

September 9, 2026

A mother keeps asking:
“When are you going to get married?”
A father often compares:
“At your age, other people’s children have already…”
Or perhaps you’ve said:
“Everything we do is for you.”
These words do not necessarily come from an intention to hurt.
Sometimes, behind them are genuine concerns, expectations, or a desire to protect your child.
But what matters is not only what parents intend, but also how those words and actions are experienced by their children.
When a child repeatedly feels that they must meet a certain standard to keep their parents reassured, they may gradually develop beliefs such as:
“I have to succeed to make my family proud.”
“I’m not allowed to fail.”
“I have to live the way my parents believe I should.”
This doesn’t mean parents should have no expectations.
And it doesn’t mean every family conflict is the parents’ fault.
But a healthy parent-child relationship needs room for both love and difference.
Sometimes, loving your child is not only about wanting them to have a good life.
It is also about learning to trust that your child can build a life of their own—even when their choices look different from the life you once imagined for them.
